Which Mercedes C-Class NTG System Do I Have? NTG4 to NTG5.5 Explained

The COMAND system in your C-Class, known by its NTG generation, is what decides which wireless CarPlay or backup camera kit fits your car. The model year on your registration does not. Four NTG generations shipped across the W204 and W205 C-Class, the changeovers do not fall neatly on calendar years, and the newest of them, NTG5.5, takes a camera upgrade but not CarPlay. Identifying yours correctly is the one step that prevents ordering the wrong part.

This guide covers the four generations, the quick checks that tell them apart from the driver's seat, and which kit each one takes.

Why the model year alone cannot tell you

Mercedes introduced new COMAND hardware at production changeovers, not on the first of January, so the years on any product page, ours included, are typical years. Three spots deserve extra care:

  • 2011. Our research places 2011 as the last NTG4 year of the W204, but our own fitment data lists 2011 under both NTG4 and NTG4.5/4.7. A 2011 car has to be checked, not assumed.
  • 2014 to 2015. The body changed from W204 to W205, and the COMAND system changed with it, from NTG4.5/4.7 to NTG5. The screen check below shows which side of that line your car is on.
  • 2018 to 2019. The W205 facelift moved to NTG5.5. Both are W205 cars, so the body alone will not separate them, and this is the line between a car that takes CarPlay and one that does not.

If your car sits on one of those lines, go straight to the verification steps below. The year narrows the candidates; only the system itself confirms the fit.

The C-Class NTG generations at a glance

System Body Typical model years Factory screen in our fitment data What we offer
NTG4 W204 2008 to 2011 5.8 inch or 7 inch Backup camera and wireless CarPlay/Android Auto
NTG4.5 / 4.7 W204 facelift 2012 to 2014 (check 2011) 5 inch or 7 inch Backup camera and wireless CarPlay/Android Auto
NTG5.0 / 5.1 / 5.2 W205 2015 to 2018 7 inch or 8.4 inch Backup camera and wireless CarPlay/Android Auto
NTG5.5 W205 facelift 2019 to 2021 12.3 inch Backup camera only

Older cars: a C-Class on NTG2, typically 2004 to 2007, has a backup camera option as well, but no CarPlay path. If your car predates 2008, confirm the system with us before ordering anything.

NTG4 (W204). The first W204 system in our range, paired with a 5.8 inch or 7 inch screen. On some of these cars the screen rises out of the dash. Both the camera and the wireless CarPlay and Android Auto upgrades work through the factory screen.

NTG4.5 and 4.7 (W204 facelift). The refreshed W204 carried NTG4.5, with the closely related NTG4.7 in the same window, on a 5 inch or 7 inch screen. Upgrade support matches NTG4, but the wiring behind the screen is different, so the right kit configuration matters.

NTG5.0, 5.1 and 5.2 (W205). The W205 brought the NTG5 family and a larger 7 inch or 8.4 inch screen. All three sub-versions take the same kit configuration, and both the camera and the CarPlay upgrades are supported.

NTG5.5 (W205 facelift). From the 2019 model year the C-Class typically carries NTG5.5, which our fitment data lists with a 12.3 inch widescreen display. For a C-Class on NTG5.5 we offer the backup camera upgrade only. Our C-Class wireless CarPlay and Android Auto kit does not cover this system, which is why its range stops at 2018. Whichever seller you are considering, the same questions apply, and we keep them in one place: what to check before you buy any CarPlay or camera kit.

How to verify which system your car has

You can settle most of this from the driver's seat in a few minutes, with the car switched on.

  1. Look at where the screen sits. On the W204 the display is built into the dash, and on some earlier cars it rises out of it. On the W205 it is a freestanding screen above the center air vents. A built-in screen points to NTG4 or NTG4.5/4.7; a freestanding one points to the NTG5 family or NTG5.5.
  2. Measure the screen. Diagonal, corner to corner, visible glass only. In our fitment data a 5.8 inch screen points to NTG4, a 5 inch screen to NTG4.5/4.7, an 8.4 inch screen to the NTG5 family, and a 12.3 inch widescreen to NTG5.5. A 7 inch screen appears on NTG4, NTG4.5/4.7 and NTG5 cars, so on its own it settles nothing; combine it with step 1.
  3. Check your year against the changeover lines. If your car is a 2011, a 2014 or 2015, or a 2018 or 2019, do not order on the year. Use steps 1 and 2, then confirm with us.
  4. If your C-Class is a 2019 or newer, confirm before ordering CarPlay, whatever the screen measures. NTG5.5 is camera only on the C-Class, and a CarPlay kit ordered for an NTG5.5 car will not fit it.
  5. When in doubt, ask. Send us your details with your VIN, the model year, and a photo of the screen and the controls around it with the car on. We will identify the system and the exact kit before you spend anything. The same identify-first approach works on other brands too; it is how BMW owners identify CIC, NBT and NBT EVO before choosing a kit.

Picking the right option on the order form

Both C-Class product pages ask for your command system before the kit goes in the cart. Select the system you confirmed above. The years beside each option are typical, not a rule; if they disagree with what you found at the car, go by the system and ask us if unsure.

What each system supports

Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2008-2018 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Wireless CarPlay & Android Auto OEM Integrated Kit covers NTG4, NTG4.5/4.7 and the NTG5 family, which in model-year terms typically means 2008 to 2018 cars. It works through the factory screen and controls you already have, needs no cutting or splicing of factory cables, and is ready to use after installation without any dealer activation or coding. On its order form you choose NTG 4.0, NTG 4.5 / 4.7 or NTG 5.0 / 5.1 / 5.2.

Backup camera. The 2004-2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class OEM Integrated Backup Camera System spans the widest range, from NTG2 cars through NTG5.5, and shows the camera image on the factory screen through plug-and-play harnesses whenever you select reverse. If yours is a 2021, confirm with us before ordering. The order form also has an option for the earlier pop-up screen cars, and a choice of flush mount or tailgate handle camera; the handle camera is listed for specific years only, so confirm it against your car first.

Both on one screen. On an NTG4, NTG4.5/4.7 or NTG5 car you can do both in one order: the CarPlay kit offers camera options, and the camera system offers a CarPlay add-on. On an NTG5.5 car, leave that CarPlay add-on unselected, because it does not apply to that system.

Both kits carry a 1-year warranty. You can see them side by side on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Backup Camera, Wireless CarPlay & Android Auto page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add wireless CarPlay to a 2019 or newer C-Class? Not from our lineup. 2019 to 2021 C-Class cars typically run NTG5.5, which we support for the backup camera upgrade only. Our wireless CarPlay kit covers NTG4 through the NTG5 family, typically 2008 to 2018.

My C-Class is a 2011. Is it NTG4 or NTG4.5? Our fitment data lists 2011 under both systems, so treat it as a check-first year. A 5.8 inch screen points to NTG4 and a 5 inch screen points to NTG4.5/4.7, but a 7 inch screen was used on both, so if yours measures 7 inches, send us your VIN and a dash photo before ordering.

How do I find out whether my car is a W204 or W205? Look at the screen. The W204 has its display built into the dash, while the W205 has a freestanding screen above the center air vents. In our range the W204 covers the NTG4 and NTG4.5/4.7 cars and the W205 starts with NTG5.

Does the CarPlay kit replace my factory screen or require dealer coding? Neither. The kit adds CarPlay and Android Auto to your existing COMAND screen, and it is ready to use after installation without dealer activation or coding.

Is there a backup camera option for a pre-2008 C-Class? Yes. Cars with NTG2, typically 2004 to 2007, have a camera option that displays on the factory screen. Confirm the system with us first, since screen hardware varies in that era.

Start with the system, not the year

Confirm the NTG system, then choose the kit. Check where the screen sits, measure it, and treat 2011, 2014 to 2015 and 2018 to 2019 as check-first years. Ready to confirm yours? Send us your details and we will match your C-Class to the exact kit.
