Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be added to an Audi A6 or A7 through the factory MMI screen, but the MMI system behind that screen, not the model year, decides which unit fits. Our fitment data lists three systems across the 2010 to 2018 cars: MMI 3G or 3G+ on early A6 cars, MMI 3G+ with touch, and MIB 2. Each one takes its own unit.
This guide centers on the 2012 to 2015 A6, S6, A7 and S7 with MMI 3G+ with touch, the system our in-stock unit is built for. Our fitment data lists the unit for those four models, so if you drive an RS version, confirm it with us first. Here is how to check which system you have, what to pick on the order form, and what the kit keeps and adds.
Fitment chart years, ours included, are typical years, not rules. These spots need extra care:
The chassis code does not settle it either. Our A7 listing calls the 2012 to 2018 A7 the C7 generation, and that span holds both MMI 3G+ and MIB 2 cars.
| System | Models | Typical model years | What we offer |
|---|---|---|---|
| MMI 3G or 3G+ | A6, S6 | 2010 to 2011 | CarPlay and Android Auto, different unit; confirm first |
| MMI 3G+ with touch | A6, S6, A7, S7 | 2012 to 2015 | CarPlay and Android Auto, the unit this guide covers, in stock |
| MIB 2 | A6, A7 | 2016 to 2018 (2018 A7: check first) | CarPlay and Android Auto, different unit; confirm first |
On a 2010 or 2011 A6, one unit covers both MMI 3G and 3G+, so you do not need to tell them apart. MIB 2 cars get their own harness and installation guide. Our A6 and A7 pages take orders for all these years, so confirm the system with us before checkout if your car is outside 2012 to 2015.
Most of this takes a few minutes in the driver's seat, with the car switched on.
For a 2012 to 2015 A6, S6, A7 or S7 that has MMI 3G+ with touch:
The question is about the MMI controller in the console, not the screen. If your controller has no touch pad, the form's No answer reads "No, my controller has no touch pad (2012-2015 cars: contact us before ordering)", so do not order yet. The same goes if you are not sure which answer fits your car, if your car is outside 2012 to 2015, or if it is an RS version: send us your details first. We will confirm the right unit before you pay.
What stays. CarPlay and Android Auto appear on your existing MMI screen. The module hides behind the factory monitor on the existing harnesses, so the cabin shows no added screen or visible wiring. Song changes, volume and voice assistant triggers stay on the controls Audi gave the car, and CarPlay control runs through the MMI hardware in the console. A factory camera can stay in use.
What it adds. Wireless or wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For a wired connection, the kit's USB/AV harness includes a USB port, and the same harness also carries a front camera input and a DVR input. Front and rear camera inputs let you add our flush mount rear camera, connect an RCA camera you already have, or add an adjustable lens or front grille camera. Both views show on the factory display, and the front view shows automatically after you shift out of reverse, for a display time you can adjust. The A7 order form also offers a tailgate handle camera, which needs a handle measuring 6 inches across.
Settings you can adjust. Our supplier's documentation lists on-screen settings for the rear camera type, parking guidelines, the front view display time and the picture size on the factory screen. Music, calls, voice assistant and navigation each get their own volume level, and CarPlay can switch between its light and dark look with your headlights.
Installation basics. No cutting or splicing of factory cables, no coding, and no dealer visit. The box holds an LVDS cable, a CAN and power cable, the USB/AV harness, a WiFi antenna and the installation guide, plus any camera you choose; exact contents depend on your car and options. The MMI 3G+ guide is on the product page under the Installation Guide tab.
Order from our Audi A6 wireless CarPlay page or our Audi A7 wireless CarPlay page. Both carry a 1-year warranty, extendable to 2 or 3 years. The unit for 2012 to 2015 MMI 3G+ with touch cars is in stock and ships from California. For other Audi models, see all our Audi CarPlay and camera upgrades.
Which Audi A6 and A7 models does this CarPlay unit fit? Our fitment data lists the 2012 to 2015 A6, S6, A7 and S7 with MMI 3G+ with touch, where MMI touch is a touch pad on the MMI controls in the center console. Earlier and later cars take a different unit. For an RS version, confirm with us before ordering.
My A6 or A7 is outside 2012 to 2015. Can it get wireless CarPlay? Our fitment data lists a separate unit for 2010 and 2011 A6 and S6 cars with MMI 3G or 3G+, and another for 2016 to 2018 A6 and A7 cars with MIB 2. Neither is the unit in this guide, so confirm your car with us before ordering.
My 2012 to 2015 car has MMI 3G+, but I am not sure it has touch. How do I check? Look at the MMI controls in the center console. On these cars MMI touch is a touch pad on those controls, and the screen itself does not respond to touch. If the pad is there, answer Yes to the touch pad question on the order form. If there is no pad, do not order yet, because our supplier lists this unit for the touch version only. If you are unsure, send us a photo of the controller and we will confirm before you buy.
Does the kit replace my factory screen or require dealer coding? Neither. CarPlay and Android Auto appear on your existing MMI screen, and the kit is ready to use after installation without dealer activation or coding.
Can I add a backup camera at the same time? Yes. The order form offers a flush mount rear camera, a front camera, or a connection for an RCA camera you already have, and a factory camera can stay in use.
Confirm the MMI system, then choose the unit, and treat 2011 to 2012, 2015 to 2016 and the 2018 A7 as check-first years. Send us your details and we will match your A6 or A7 to the exact unit.
