How to Install a Backup Camera on a Jeep Grand Cherokee

Vehicle: Jeep Grand Cherokee (2008-2020)
Install time: 30 to 60 minutes
Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate
Tools required: Plastic trim removal tool, Phillips screwdriver, OBD-II activator (some years)

Why OEM-Integrated Over Aftermarket?

Your Jeep Grand Cherokee's factory head unit — whether MyGig, UConnect 4.3, 5.0, or 8.4 — has a built-in video input that Chrysler left unpopulated on vehicles without the factory camera option. Our OEM-integrated kit activates that input and connects a plug-and-play camera so the image appears on your factory screen automatically. No aftermarket monitor, no dash clutter, and the factory controls all keep working exactly as they did.

Before You Begin

This guide applies to 2008-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles with a factory MyGig or UConnect head unit. The system is plug-and-play: the harness connects between your factory wiring and head unit using existing keyed connectors. Most model years work immediately; some (2008-2013 MyGig and select 2014+ UConnect variants) require a one-time OBD-II activation to enable the video input, which we also sell as a separate accessory.

Step 1 — Gather Tools and Unbox the Kit

You'll need a plastic trim removal tool, a Phillips-head screwdriver, and a clean workspace. Unbox your kit and confirm all components are present: the camera, plug-and-play harness, and any mounting hardware. Keep the included instruction sheet handy — it contains Jeep Grand Cherokee-specific connector diagrams and any model-year notes.

Step 2 — Disconnect the Battery

Disconnect the negative terminal of the vehicle battery before working on any electrical connections. This prevents accidental shorts and ensures safety. Wait a few minutes for residual capacitance to discharge before proceeding.

Step 3 — Remove the Head Unit Surround

Using the plastic trim removal tool, carefully pry around the edges of the head unit surround panel. Work slowly and evenly to avoid damaging the trim clips. Once the panel is loose, disconnect any wire harnesses attached and set it aside.

Step 4 — Unbolt the Factory Head Unit

Remove the Phillips screws securing the head unit to the dash frame. Gently slide the head unit forward — the factory connectors will still be attached behind it. Do not force anything; if it feels stuck, re-check for screws you may have missed.

Step 5 — Connect the Plug-and-Play Harness

Disconnect the factory harness from the back of the head unit. Connect the provided plug-and-play harness between the vehicle's factory wiring and the head unit. The connectors are keyed and only fit one way. Refer to your kit's instruction sheet for the exact pinout diagram.

Step 6 — Route the Camera Cable

Run the camera's video cable from the head unit area, along the headliner or under the door sill trim, to the rear of the vehicle. Route it through existing grommets into the tailgate or trunk lid area. Avoid pinching the cable or running it near moving parts or sharp edges.

Step 7 — Mount the Camera and Test

Mount the camera in the designated OEM location (typically above the license plate). Reconnect the battery. Start the vehicle and shift into reverse — the factory head unit display should automatically switch to the camera view. If everything works correctly, reinstall the trim panels in reverse order of removal.

OBD-II Activation (if required)

Some Jeep Grand Cherokee model years require a one-time OBD-II activation to enable the factory camera input. If your product page notes that an activator is needed, plug it into your OBD-II port (typically under the steering column), follow the on-screen prompts, and the activation completes in 2-3 minutes. After that, the camera displays automatically when you shift into reverse — no further reprogramming needed.

Troubleshooting

No image when shifting to reverse

Most common cause: the OBD-II activation step wasn't completed. Verify with our Programmers category — plug the activator in and follow the prompts. Also check that the camera connector is fully seated at both ends.

Image appears but is low quality or fuzzy

Some older MyGig head units output NTSC video at a lower resolution than UConnect 8.4+. This is a factory limitation, not a camera issue. For a higher-quality image, consider upgrading to a newer head unit.

Camera works intermittently

Usually a loose connection. Re-seat both ends of the camera harness and verify the reverse signal wire is connected to a clean reverse light circuit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Grand Cherokee model years does this cover?

This guide applies broadly to 2008-2020 Grand Cherokees with MyGig or UConnect head units. Check your specific product page for exact compatibility with your year and head unit variant.

Will this void my Jeep warranty?

Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, installing an aftermarket accessory generally does not void your factory warranty. See our FAQ page for more detail.

Do I need a programmer?

Some Grand Cherokee model years (primarily 2008-2013 with MyGig) require OBD-II activation. Check the specific product page for your camera kit — it will indicate whether an activator is needed. We sell compatible activators in our Programmers category.
